In the lead up to my the September Bolt Action tournament, I wanted to get a few war games under my belt to help get the brain juices flowing. I set up two games to get some practice in, neither of which were actually Bolt Action. One is a Warhammer 40,000 game that I’ll play this coming Friday, the other being this X-Wing game!
Being a quasi tournament practice, I told myself to try a build a lesser meme/slant list than what I normally do. I picked First Order because it is the faction I’m most familiar with and then started sprinkling in what I assume are some First Order staples: Whisper Kylo, Frodo Baggins in the fo, and fo Malarus. I wasn’t sure what else to take, but then I had a shower thought.
I wondered if seismic charges could blow up obstacles that I place, such as an electro chaff cloud. I dug up the rules reference and it turned out you could! So now I was on a quest to build a bomber which could blow up their own electro chaff cloud. Enter: Bomber Dread. I had some points left over so I splurged on the i6 Midnight in the FO.
We played the new XWA missing Ancient Knowledge. Brian had played the mission a few times and had some thoughts that he wanted to see if I shared. This was also my first game after the XWA shift to score half points on ships and capping the number of objective points that can be earned a turn.
Round 1
In an odd decision, the ancient knowledge objects were arranged heavily to one side of the board. Both side start to head towards the middle lane. Kylo and Midnight try to take a wide flanking maneuver with their high speed to start a run down the board's equator.
Score: π₯0 - π¦0
Round 2
Time to fire the only electro chaff missile. Pursuit thrusters allow me to get a decent electro chaff shot at the two X-wings, only hitting one. Both sides pick up an ancient knowledge.
FO KO Evaan for +3 points. Both sides score 1 objective point for each side holding an ancient knowledge.
Score: π₯4 - π¦1Round 3
Things get a little bumpy in Round 3. A few ships knock into each other, and some bombs start to get dropped. FO and Rebels each gain +1 objective and Rebels gain an additional +2 points for bloody-ing (4th Edition D&D anyone?) Midnight.
Score: π₯5 - π¦4Round 4
More bombs kick off Round 4. Another proton bomb from the Horton, the remaining Y-Wing, and seismic charge is dropped between a few asteroids for choice. 7 damage is dealt out to ships through different bombs.
Kylo, Frodo, and Malarus are all half-pointed, scoring the rebels +5 points plus +2 more for controlling knowledge. Kendy goes down in a blaze of glory, half pointing Kylo, and Horton takes some pain from Midnight and Dread leaving them on half points. FO gains +6 points on ships and +1 for controlling ancient knowledge.
Score: π₯12 - π¦11Round 5
The First Order have a few critical hits on their ships that force their hand a bit. Luckily, the Whisper's turret means Kylo can punch it forward as fast as he can and still take a shot behind. Ashoka takes a shot which blows up Midnight, but not before the First Order dish out some range 1 shots. Yonder in the X-Wing and Horton go down in the barrage. Rebels score +2 points for Midnight being KO'd, but First Order gain +8 for the KO on Yonder an Horton. Each side scores a single point for Ancient Knowledge, taking the FO to 20 points!
Score: π₯20 - π¦14
