As I started wrapping up some painting projects at the end of 2024, I started musing on what my 2025 hobby plans were going to be. Sitting in a pile since AcadeCon 2023 was an unopened Tau XV88 Broadside that I picked up on the cheap and a couple DX-6 Remora Drone Stealth Fighters that were built but never painted. I began sizing up some of my Tau leftover models which never got built or painted for one reason or another and decided one of my 2025 goals was to complete these models. Along with the Broadside and Remoras, I had three XV22 Stealth Suits which were only about 50% painted and a kitbashed Ethereal which was broken when my daughter toppled over my display case.
First on the list to tackle were the Broadside and Remoras. I wanted to get some paint put on them prior to the game I had with Tom back in February, I hit the Remora's with a flat red primer and the Broadside with a flat black to get them primed and tried to just get a sloppy coat of Pro Acryl Burnt Red down just so they fit in with the army a bit.
Progress - March 27, 2025: Day 1 officially behind us when I did the quick speed paint of the burnt red, I spent most of tonight's work focusing on the Remoras. With so many hard to reach nooks, and being a Forge World resin model, I tried to just get a solid coat of paint in all the cracks and crevices. I mainly focused on getting the black down and then some spot colors of gold and tan to help me feel like I was making progress. The black on the Remoras is in contrast to the typical khaki that I put on my other drones, but it matches what I've done on my Ghostkeel's Stealth Drones.
I didn't really touch anything on the Broadside. I need to bring out my completed Broadside to see which parts I want to match and if there are any parts I want to mix it up on.
Progress - April 3, 2025: A short hour hobby session this night after taking some time to replace an alternator. I worked on smoothing out the red on the Broadside and then getting some spot color of grey on the Remoras and Broadside. I also broke out the Tamiya Black panel liner to panel line the Remoras.
I made two big messes too, one with the panel liner and touching the barrel of a Remora and flooding the red paint. The other, was apparently my blue Pro Acyrl has something wrong with the bottle and splattered blue paint everywhere when I shook it up to do the Remora's lenses.
The Remora's are now pretty much done aside from fixing the flooded red burst cannon and then hitting the front of the gun barrels with black when I take it out to work on the Broadside.
Progress - April 10, 2025: An hour hobby this night. I spent some time relaying down a common black color and blocking in different colors on the model in a "feels good" kind of way, allowing for some interesting spot colors.
I tried a new khaki color from Army Painter's Fanatics line called Barren Dune. It was a bit more yellow than I'd like in my khaki color, but went on pretty easy. I'd like to try it more in the future for anything I wan to paint a yellow color, especially as a starting point. It popped on against the red and will dull down when I hit the whole model with a sloppy Agrax Earthshade wash to bring it in line with the rest of my army. I think we probably sit at the 50% point at the end of this night.
Progress - June 5, 2025: *blows dust off this diary*
My friend has recently joined the Warhammer 40,000 hobby/game and we have a game scheduled in the next week or so. As part of this game, I want to bring my second Broadside to squad up. Fewer models and squads on the table will hopefully lower my brain work for both teaching and playing the game.
To bring the broadside up to a more acceptable state, I worked on some of the gold details, some silver drybrush and the all over Agrax Earthshade wash to get the recesses darkened up.
Only thing left to do is hit the lenses with a blue or green, paint the missile tips bright red, and possible do some glowing on the rail rifle. Base it and call it a day!
The Remoras were pretty much done last time. However, an encounter with my son left one of the Remoras with a broken wing that will need to be glued back together.
