Its been a while since I've played a 2000pt game of Warhammer 40,000. The last time I attempted to play a 2000pt game was with Tom back in February, and we only got two turns done before I had to leave to due to a family emergency. Prior to that, It probably hasn't been since we moved to our new house in 2022!
Well, Luke wanted to get a 2K game in so I had to start looking at my options. Since the start of 10th Edition, My Tau army which was once about 2400pts now barely scrapes by at 2000. Seeing that we were trying to get a game in on a Friday night, I opted not to run the Tau list with 40+ 28mm bases coupled with the Stormsurge and the kitchen sink. To help the game move, I decided on running the Space Marines. While I don't have 2K of either the Space Wolves or White Scars armies, I did have enough of each to make a decent 2K list with some options.
Enamored by the resent updates (read December 2024) to the Outriders, I wanted to try running my old bikers as outriders and pairing it with a Chaplain on Bike (formerly a Khan on Bike). Throwing the Big Khan himself into the list for flavor and duelist capability, a couple of Dreadnoughts, and a Rhino filled with First Borns, I was happy with a relatively decent anti-infantry list that didn't have too much to think about.
Luke opted to use the new Grey Knights codex rules that leaked the week leading up to our game. He ran the new Banisher detachment and data sheets accordingly.
We played using the 10th edition launch 2023 Leviathan mission deck. We pulled a standard "sit on the points" mission with a twist of drawing 3 secondary cards. The Deployment picked was not ideal for my army. The board layout had large clear lanes that the Landraider and Dreadknights could easily run down. I didn't bring enough anti-tank units to hurt the Landraider or appreciably shoot at the Dreadknights, so my priority was going to be trying to take down the Purifier and Paladin blobs that will be making their way towards me.
Round 1
Turn 1 went to the Grey Knights and I knew I was going to be in trouble from a heavy alpha strike on my left hand side. The clear lane meant easy delivery of the Land Raider's contents close to the dreadnought on the left there and it took quite a beating. The Purifiers in the middle put the hurt on the eliminators.
White Scars go second and I attempt to get my Intercessors to throw out some lethal hits on the purifiers. The Rhino drops Tactical Marines on the right hand objectives to start scoring primaries while the Khan and assault intercessors move to engage the units now in my back line. The bikers try to move and assault into the backline marines, but they use the new Shadow of Anarch to GTFO (the bikers will fail to make a single charge this game, really hurting my chances).
Score: 🟥0 - 🟦5
Round 2
Nothing terribly exciting happens turn 2. The second Grandmaster Dreadknight pops on the board while Crowe and his Crowenies pop into my back line. My Terminators drop in the Grey Knight backline and make a decent long bomb charge to end up on the home objective. I score decent of secondaries.
Upon reflection, I used a command point to put a single Infiltrator on one of the points that could have probably been more useful elsewhere. The thought was that the Infiltrator would mean that some shooting would need to be split to him to try to deny some primary VPs. In hindsight, using it to either help move another unit or heroic intervention may have been a better use.
Score: 🟥21 - 🟦20
Round 3
It became clear that we weren't going to get much further than Turn 3 here, so with the secondaries pulled we just went to maximize points. If we were going to play an extra round or two, I would have played my back line terminators differently (not charging them in so they would deny primary points). I'm not sure if I should have charged my bikers into the Nem Dread or not. It was not a bet I was willing to lose so I kept them safer.
Score: 🟥37 - 🟦30
